WEDNESDAY LEAGUE 2023

Our Wednesday League afternoons finished on a very rainy Wednesday afternoon on 20 September 2023 so bowling was not possible. Due to the dreadful weather only a handful of folks turned up to hear Colin Pickering, our Club Competition Secretary, announce that Terry Elston had won the Men’s competition and that Sue Wood had won the Ladies' Competition.

The formal presentations of the Cups were made as part of our Closing Day a few days later on Saturday 23 September by our President, Carole Beckford. This was in front of a good proportion of the Club who had gathered for a final chance to play on the green this year and which was followed by an excellent buffet and raffle, organised by Sue Wood.

The Wednesday League Competition this year was played over 15 Wednesdays with players drawing for rinks and teams each week. Players score 3 points for being in a winning team, 2 points for a drawn game and 1 point for being in a losing team. All Club players are welcome to attend on any Wednesday and the afternoons are very friendly and ideal for beginners. We intend to repeat this successful format again next season.

WEDNESDAY 12th JULY 2023 - 2023 SEASON UPDATE

We have continued this year with the popular Wednesday League on Wednesday afternoons and so far we have had 11 such afternoons. They are always open to all Club Members. These afternoons are intended to give all our members the opportunity to play bowls matches in a relaxed atmosphere. They are ideal for those who have just completed their beginners 5 lessons or those who feel they need more practice.

So far this year 7 of our new bowlers have attended at least one of these practice matches. Those attending do not need to book in or book a rink and can just turn up at the Club at 1.30 PM. The entry cost for each afternoon is £2.

We hold a simple draw for who plays with who on which rink at 1.45 PM – although skips are always pre-selected from the more experienced players. The match formats depend on how many turn up that day. We intend to start playing by 2.00 PM. We play 15 ends with one on the first 2 ends. We finish with tea and biscuits, which gives our beginners ample opportunities to ask questions and to book into our Friendlies and our Sunday Competitions.

Any members wishing to find out more about Wednesday League afternoons are asked to contact Tim Bryning.

WEDENESDAY 7th SEPTEMBER 2022 - FINAL LEAGUE DAY

This was the final day of a very successful season for the Wednesday League.  Organised by Tim Bryning, over 50 bowlers participated during the season of whom, encouragingly 17, were new bowlers.

The Men's winner was David Williams with 22 points and runner up was David Sherwin with 21 points.  The Ladies' winner was Loraine Austen with 10 points and equal runners up were Sue Wood and Lesley Hart with 9 points.  Colin Pickering presented the trophy to David but Loraine was unavailable.

This was the culmination of a very enjoyable 15 matches with pandemic restrictions reduced from the previous year.
