THURSDAY 7th SEPTEMBER 2023 - PHIL COLLIER CUP

Phil Collier was a stalwart member of the club. He was head greenkeeper for a number of years and was Club Captain in 1998, 1999, 2004, 2005 and 2006. The Cup was presented by his wife, Joan, in 2011.

The Phil Collier Cup was played on Thursday 7th September on one of the hottest days of the year. Having reminded everyone to keep hydrated and to take advantage of the air conditioning in the club house, everyone stayed well and enjoyed the competition.

The Phil Collier Cup is a drawn pair competition where an experienced player is drawn with a less experienced one. This is an all day event with each pair playing against the other pairs in their group over a number of rounds, finishing with Semi finals and Final.

Joan Collier was a spectator for most of the day and she presented the Cups at the end of play. Winners were Barbara Fry and Keith Anthony and runners-up were Anita Evans and John Greening.

FRIDAY NIGHT MIXED TRIPLES (FNMT)

The FNMT league competition was completed on 1st September 2023.  The final positions and points for the four teams after the 12 matches were:

  1. Hawks 42. 2.  Buzzards. 41. Kestrels 32.  Eagles 31.  The league was programmed for 15 matches but 3 were cancelled due to bad weather.

Friday nights have become a most enjoyable social evening.  On the final night, the organiser, Cliff Walters, thanked a number of people for their contribution to the organising of the event.  First, were the Captains of the teams Colin Pickering, Bill Hussey, Kevin Donaldson, and Tim Bryning.  Second, Terri Lake and her bar staff who provided sustenance throughout the season. Third, Pete and Jan Cornick for providing the meat draw, which is the star of the evening.  Finally, Dave Burge and the green team for providing excellent rinks throughout the season.

Jan and Pete Cornick presented over £300 draw profit to Pat Griffin for club funds.

Finally, our club Captain Carl Budd, presented bottles of wine to the winning team, Hawks.

In all, this has been another season of enjoyable FNMT which has become the highlight of the social week.

SUNDAY 20th AUGUST 2023 - THE JACK CUMMINGS CUP and THE BERYL LAWES SHIELD

These two competitions were held on the same day.  The 17 competitors and the spectators enjoyed a good standard of bowling.  Pat Griffin, our competition organiser, once again provided an excellent day of bowling which was assisted by the good weather.

THE JACK CUMMINGS CUP - MEN'S SINGLES KNOCK OUT.

The Jack Cummings Cup was presented by Jenny Andrews in memory of her father. It has been contested since 2017. Its predecessor, the Lignum Trophy, was contested from 1998 to 2016.

On this occasion there were 9 players divided into two round robin leagues each of 6 ends.  The two winners of the leagues who played in the final were Steve Clayton and Jack Knight. Jack, a new bowler with us this year, is to be commended for his excellent performance.  Unfortunately for him, he caught Steve on his best form and the score was 13 - 0.

THE BERYL LAWES SHIELD - LADIES' SINGLES KNOCK OUT

A new shield was introduced for this competition in 2017.  Previously, from 1985, the Beryl Lawes Cup and Diamond Cup (runner up) were contested.

On this occasion there were 8 players divided into two round robin leagues. The two winners who contested the final were Del Way and Terri Lake. The winner was decided on the last bowl of the last end - Del Way 7-6.

SUNDAY 30th JULY 2023 - PHOENIX SHIELD (TARGET TRIPLES).

The Phoenix Shield is a target bowls competition that has been contested since 1993.  This year it was held in inclement weather with a constant fall of rain throughout.  For this reason only one round of the competition was completed.

Pat Griffin determined the result from the scores in the only round that was completed and Kate Patton, representing our sponsors, presented the shield to the winning triples team.

Winners -Team B - 860 points - Daphne West, Jay Allen and Emily Thomas.

Runners up - Team E - 770 points - Colin Pickering, Ted Aston and John Harding.

TUESDAY 13th SEPTEMBER 2022 - PHIL COLLIER CUP

The Phil Collier Cup was played on Tuesday 13th September and 28 Players took part. This was a great turn out.

Phil Collier was a stalwart member of the club. He was head greenkeeper for a number of years and was Club Captain in 1998, 1999, 2004, 2005 and 2006. The Cup was presented by his wife, Joan, in 2011.

The Phil Collier Cup is a full day competition and is a pairs competition where an experienced player is drawn to play with an inexperienced player. It is a knockout competition, eventually culminating in a semi-finals and then a Finals.

Although the weather forecast stated that there would be showers all day, we were fortunate that it didn't rain until the afternoon but not surprisingly it did start drizzling during the semi-finals and Final. It was great to see so many of the participants who stayed to support those players in the Final and for the presentations. The Cups were presented by Joan Collier.

Semi-Finals:

Laurieve Jenkins and Barry Males beat John Greening and Connor Joyce.

Terri Lake and Barry Larby beat Sally Burton and Kevin Donaldson.

Final:

THE HARRY LANE TROPHY - SUNDAY 7th AUGUST 2022.

The Harry Lane Trophy was run by Pat Griffin and played on Sunday 7th August  This was a fun day, with great atmosphere, despite  having to reduce the competition from five rounds to three, due to the extreme heat. Twenty five players, with five new members, were split into five teams, although each person was playing as an individual. They had to match their skills against the targets which were spread out over the six rinks. Each target was set out at a different length from the mat. They played two rounds in the morning with a further one after lunch.

Some of the scores were excellent. Trophies were presented to the top lady and gentleman.

The results were:

Ladies winner - Margaret Thorne with score of 1260.  Ladies Runner-up - Sylvia Pink with score of 1055.

Men's winner - Barry Larby with score of 1610.  Men's Runner-up - Colin Pickering with score of 1470.

CLUB COMPETITIONS 2019.

*****************************************************************************************
PHIL COLLIER CUP – SUNDAY 15th SEPTEMBER 2019.

The competition was held on a very hot day. There were 28 competitors drawn into 14 teams of pairs. Each team paired an experienced bowler with a less experienced bowler. The teams were divided into 2 round robin leagues (Red and Black) of seven teams with the top teams going through to the final stage. Each match was 6 ends with each player bowling four woods. Thus to get to the final each player would bowl 36 ends. This proved to be a test of fitness for the bowlers. The outright winners of Red League were Jack Hancock and Paul Davy (five victories and 10 points) who narrowly defeated Richard Brown and Karen Churchill by 2 points. The Black league ended with 3 teams on 8 points. Terry Lake and Ian Thorne had 38 shots so they beat Julie Pitt and Cliff Walters by 2 shots and Nathan Wood and Iris Waller by 4 shots.

The final was keenly contested with Terri and Ian being victorious by 6 -2. It was a great pleasure to have Joan Collier to present the Cup which is in memory of her late husband who was a stalwart club member.

The contest was enjoyed by everyone and was a worthy tribute to Phil.

SUNDAY 11th AUGUST 2019

ERNIE WHITE MIXED TRIPLES SHIELD

This was a lovely day, lots of sunshine but rather breezy. It was encouraging to see so many of our new members taking part.

The Ernie White Triples match consisted of 7 teams, of similar standards, each team playing each of the other six teams. Each game comprised 6 ends with 2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw. The team with the most points being the winner. It was satisfying that all teams won at least 1 match.

SUNDAY 7th JULY 2019 – PHOENIX SHIELD

The event is a Target Triples competition that was first held in 1997.

A good day was had by all although the weather was rather changeable. It was great to see the field included six of our new members. We hope they enjoyed it as much as everyone else

The Phoenix Target Triples competition is a team competition, each team comprising 3 members. The teams play the other team in their group in three rounds over 6 targets. All bowls on the target count for their respective team score and the winners are the team with the most points. The teams are drawn in such a way that ensures each team is of a similar standard.

SUNDAY 2nd JUNE 2019 - FRANKIE LANE SHIELD TRIATHLON

This is a drawn mixed triples “triathlon” competition. Each team of three provides a single and a pair and the three also play as a triple. The points from their three matches are totalled to determine the Winners and Runners-up. The Shield was presented by Councillor Frankie Lane in 1995.

Singles - 21 up/ 3 woods. Pairs - 18 ends/3 woods. Triples 18 ends/3 woods.

There were 18 members drawn into 6 teams. The competition was played on a damp and dull day although the drizzle did not cause any interruptions. Singles and pairs were played in the morning and triples after lunch.

The winners won all their three matches. Three teams won two matches so the runners-up were decided on bowls count-back. There were 6 junior members participating and of the winners and runners-up Dylan Churchill, Steve Clayton and Denis West were the 2018 winners.

Thanks go to Pat Griffin for organising the event and presenting the shields.

SUNDAY 5th MAY 2019 - HARRY LANE TROPHY - TARGET BOWLS

Our first competition of the season was well supported with 20 players taking part. It was rather cold except when the sun came out so jackets and hoodies were continually being taken off and on.

There were 5 groups of players each bowling at 6 targets of varying distance from the mat, with 4 woods. The target rings scored 100, 50, 25 or 10 points.

Gerry and Pat Griffin organised an excellent event the final outcome of which was:

Ladies’ winner - Sylvia Pink: 2nd - Del Way: 3rd - Millie Tuck.

Men’s winner - Colin Pickering: 2nd - Pete Cornick: 3rd - Tim Bryning.

The ladies performed better than the men so the men will have to improve for the next competition.
