Sunday 25th September 2011 - A Report on the season by Ladies' Captain, Liz Males.

The ladies have done well this season and we have been joined by six enthusiastic new members which bodes well for next year.

We put two teams in the North Dorset triples but vice captain Joy Steele had difficulty finding a team on County dates. Hopefully the newer members will fill this gap next season. The Silver team just beat the Blue team for 2nd place by a better shot difference of +15 after tieing on 36 points.

The Edna Paisley ladies went one better than last year by not only winning the East league but by beating the West winner Portland Borstal in the final by 14 shots. Well done indeed,

This year we had gone up to Division 1 in the Ladies rinks league, and have had a very creditable 5th place in the final table with 85 points just beating West Moors on shot difference. (This is in fact one point higher than we won the 2nd division last year on 84 points),

The June Culpin double rink Cup was contested well and we beat Dorchester by 23 shots and Greenhill by 21 shots putting us in the semi-final.  This was played at Broadstone on 9th Sept against Bridport in somewhat inclement weather in a thrilling finish both teams were all square on 20 ends 17 all and 19 all. Unfortunately Sally Burton's team rink ended one down and Jenny Andrews' team were holding one until the last wood from Bridport's Margaret Clapp who pushed up their short bowl to push out our shot and we finished 2 shots down. Well tried our ladies!

Chris Hann, Joy Steele and Jenny Andrews won the Benevolent Triples for the second year running on an extra end at Dorchester; can they get the hat trick next year?

The final of the Dorset Bowling league pairs was contested well by Gill Walford and Sally Burton who came out the winners by 30 shots to 17 against Di Towndrow and Monica Hodder from Greenhill.

The last competition final was played at Shaftesbury on Thursday; the John Coleburn Trophy triples against Sherborne. Despite winning on three rinks we lost overall by 6 shots on a lovely sunny afternoon.

In conclusion we have had a good season which we have all enjoyed.  We can look forward to 2012 with optimism as our new bowlers become more experienced.

Friday 9th September 2011. Highlights of Recent Success.

As the season comes to a close this page shows extracts from the Club Captain's report by Tony Ives to the Committee on 8thSeptember 2011.

My thanks to Dick Hall who ran the Wednesday league.  And to Sid and Joy Steele who formed and ran the Beginners League on Saturdays.  Both of these are an integral part in integrating the many new bowlers into competition bowls.

......I congratulate the first team on winning the Dorset League Division 1 by a margin of 15 points and they can look forward to playing in the Premier League next year.

The second team finished  a creditable fourth in Division 2 only 7 points behind the winners and with the talent now in the club can look forward to an assault at winning the league next year.

Of the 4 teams entered in the Percy Baker leagues 3 won their respective sections and the top team has reached the final to be played at Poole Park on 18th September.

The North Dorset final was a disappointment in losing to Wimborne on our own rink.

The North Dorset triples league Division 1 was won by our first team with the second team finishing mid table having given several new bowlers a valuable taste of league bowls.

.......Ken Hann and Ben Paulley represented Dorset in the Middleton Cup.

We suppled a rink to represent Dorset in the 4 South Western Counties league games.

We lost in the first round of the County Cup by one shot to last year's winners Melcombe Regis and had 2 teams in the last 8 of the County fours play offs.

Well done to everyone.  Tony Ives.

Saturday 30th July 2011.

Tony Ives, the Men's Captain, is delighted with the early outcome of the Men's Leagues.

In the Percy Baker Competiton, 3 of our 4 teams won their respective leagues and went through to the knock-out stages.

E5, Captain Malcolm Groves, were drawn against Shaftesbury 1 who they defeated by the narrowest of margins. The away team, skipped by Malcolm Groves, lost by one wood having given away 5 on the third end. The home team, skip Gordon Crabtree, won by two to give overall victory.

E3, Captain Tony Ives, were unfortunately drawn against E2, Captain Barry Males.  E2 were successful and the next round, to be played on 9th August, will see E2 play E5 so that we are guaranteed a team in the semi-final.

Meanwhile in the Dorset Leagues our Division 1 team is top of the league and our Division 2 team is in the top half.  Well done everyone.

Thursday 26th May 2011.  As a result of the members' efforts, lead by our Captain Tony Ives, 33 potential new members turned up for Open Day on 7th May.  Club Members were present to give everyone a taste of what the Club and bowls are about. The follow-on from this is that 27 people have signed up for the New Member's Coaching Course in May and June.  This comprises six 2 hour sessions with qualified coaches. We are hopeful that this will lead to a considerable increase in our future numbers which bodes well for the Club.

New bowlers during their first coaching session.

5 September 2010.  Men's league results.  Best season ever.  The Men's Section entered seven teams into the 2010 leagues in Dorset.  Under the leadership of our Club Captain, Tony Ives, our teams have shown great skill and determination by winning 4 of the Leagues and coming Runners-up in a fifth.  Our successes were:

1. Dorset League Area 'B' East Division 3.

2. Percy Baker League E3 (over 65s).

3. Percy Baker League E5 (over 65s).

4. North Dorset Triples League 1.

4 September 2010.  Even more success for the Ladies Section.  Our over 60s Ladies' team are Champions of the Edna Paisley Triples League.  They were undefeated in their fourteen matches and with 75 points their closest rivals were Broadstone Wessex with 67.  Well done ladies.

4 September 2010.  More success for the Ladies' Section. Freda Yates and Ann Dennis were our 2010 Club Drawn Pairs Champions. Consequently they represented the Club at the Dorset League Drawn Pairs Championship.  They were successful in the early rounds at Verwood on Monday 30th August and then went on to win the competition at Poole Park on Friday 3rd September.  Well done Freda and Ann.

31 August 2010.  Outdoor Wheelchair Success.  Congratulations to Richard Brown who has recently retained the pairs trophy at the annual British Wheelchair Bowls Association championship.  This was held at St Andrews, Weston-super-Mare.  Together with Mike Diston they fought their way to the final which they won 12-1, 11-7.

31 August 2010. Men's League Success.  Congratulations to the Men's team, under the Captaincy of Tony Ives, on becoming champions of Division 3 in the Dorset League Area 'B' East.

31 August 2010.  Ladies League Success.  Congratulations to the Ladies team, under the Captaincy of Sylvia Pink, on becoming champions of Division 2 of the Dorset Ladies Bowling League. After 12 matches they were 8 points ahead of their nearest rivals, Lyme Regis. They can now look forward to playing at the highest level in 2011.

12 August 2010.  As reported below on 2 July, Sally Burton, Liz Males and Freda Yates played in the Triples National Finals on Friday 6th August.  Unfortunately they lost narrowly by 15 -12 but we are proud of them to have represented the Club at such a high level.

12 August 2010.  Men's Leagues.   North Dorset Triples.  In Division 1 Phil Collier's team are top of the league after 3 matches.  In Division 2 Tony Ives' team are 2nd with a game in hand.  In Dorset League Area East we beat Broadstone Wessex to go top of Division 3 by a clear 6 points with only 3 matches to play.

5 August 2010.  Our congratulations go to Ken Hann on two counts.  First, for reaching the last 16 of the Bowls England over-55 singles.  In the area final he was 12-3 down but came back to win 21-20 against Nick Greenfill at Box, Wiltshire.  He now has to wait to see if he has another match before the national stages at Worthing on 24-25 August.  Second, he has reached the semi-finals of the Dorset Champion of Champions. Finals day will be held at Blandford on Sunday, 12th September.  I am sure Ken will be well supported.

2 July 2010. Congratulations to Sally Burton, Liz Males and Freda Yates.  At Dorchester they recently made their way to the County finals by convincingly defeating, 21-8, the West Moors Team skipped by Janet Price. They will now represent Dorset in the ladies' triples during the Bowls England Championship at Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire on 7 - 10 August.  Our second team of Lesley West, Joy Steele and Brenda Pluthero made their way to the semi-final but were beaten by a strong team from Greenhill.  Well done ladies.  See also the Gallery page for images.

3 July 2010. Our early season campaign to recruit more bowlers into the club has proved to be very successful.  Over 35 potential bowlers attended Open Day on 8th May.  Following on from this Tony Ives and his team of qualified coaches have held beginners instruction courses.  These have been very well attended and the result is that we now have 28 more members some of whom have already played in competitive matches.  See also the Gallery page for images.

30 June 2010. The new decking project, on the Milldown Road side of the green, has proved to be very successful for members and visitors alike. The furniture is now in place and Ken Hann has decorated it with flower pots.  We have also purchased new rink score boards so that spectators can see the score from both ends of the rinks.
